RYA Intermediate Powerboat Day Cruising Course
The RYA Intermediate Powerboat course suits those possessing Powerboat Level 2 and a reasonable level of boating experience now developed after a season or two, and an interest to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to plan and undertake coastal passages.
At first glance the RYA Intermediate syllabus reads as very similar to RYA Powerboat Level 2. The key difference though is the distinct level to which each subject is covered and the practical application of the skills and knowledge developed. The Intermediate course will address directly the use of electronic aids such as GPS, looking at the integration of these aids with techniques such as.
Cross Track Ladder
This powerboat training course includes: Basic Pilotage and passage planning for small boats. Chart work balancing the use of GPS and use of charts in a small craft. Correct use of GPS (XTE (cross track error), SOG (Speed over ground), BTW & DTW). Other areas such as tides and now looking in more detail at passage planning and Pilotage, both in theory and in practice, and we try to plan and run a number of passages during your two days - this is a great way of taking your knowledge a step further beyond the basics. The course takes everything learned on your level 2 course a stage further, it is also an ideal step for those wishing to proceed on to the Advanced Powerboat Course.
Candidates should be competent to the standard of National Powerboat Certificate Level 2 with coastal endorsement. It is strongly recommended that candidates also hold a first aid certificate and a VHF operator's certificate.
The full syllabus for all powerboat courses is available in the Powerboat Logbook, RYA publication G20/04.
